The hike to Royal Arch in the Flatirons (just west of Boulder, Colorado) is a remarkable hike at any time of year. 3.3 miles round trip, with 1,400 feet of elevation gain in about 1.7 miles. The spectacular arch, with views looking east out into the plains (Boulder is literally where the mountains meet the plains) is such a fabulous payoff. And then you add compact snow and ice on the trail for an extra challenge. Grippers are highly recommended, and next time I’m bringing my hiking poles (for the downhill return).
