Sacred Presence is a phrase I used a lot in my preaching days. Since I retired it hasn’t shown up as frequently in my regular speech patterns, but as a concept it remains central to how I experience the world. For me it is more helpful than the term “God”, because it reminds me that I am surrounded and filled and connected to all that is Sacred. The only question is whether or not I will notice. When I am open and make myself available then my experience of the world is expansive. And when I forget then my experience tends to contract and take on a darker feel. The Sacred remains present, but unavailable because intentionally or unintentionally I have closed the door.
The good news is that I only have to open the door a crack and Sacred Presence will find a way in. Sometimes all that is required is to be willing to be willing. And there are limitless ways in which I can experience and be transformed by such Presence. For me it often comes in the form of Beauty, and I am frequently surprised by some new way to see beauty in the world. The photo at the top of this blog post is of an abandoned piece of farm equipment. I’ve walked past it on numerous occasions and included it in photos more than once. But not until yesterday had it occurred to me to get down low enough to catch the sunrise colors through it. One more experience of Sacred Presence feeding me in ways I had not expected.
How does Sacred Presence (by whatever name you choose to call it) show up in your life? And what can you do to stay open so you will notice?
