Today is my birthday! 67 years ago I came into the world and took my first breath. Between then and now, I have taken approximately 846,216,000 breaths. My heart has beat somewhere in the neighborhood of 2,993,292,000 times. I have travelled about 342,409,128,000 miles, including the earth’s daily rotations on its axis, the earth’s orbits around the sun, and our solar system’s orbit around the galactic center. Closer to home, and more significant to my life, I have had the good fortune to share life and love with three different women, managed to collect seven daughters who aren’t genetically related to me, along with multiple grandchildren, and more friends than I can keep track of. I almost died once, but didn’t – and for that I am exceedingly glad. I’ve learned to take photographs that occasionally touch people with a sense of beauty, awe, and wonder. Poems have been written and shared, a book has been published, and several thousand sermons have been preached. In the past year I’ve walked about 1,500 miles (best guess). And before the year is out I anticipate walking 600 miles across northern Spain on the Camino de Santiago. All in all my life has been and continues to be blessed beyond any expectation I might once have held about such things. And I am more grateful than I have words to offer. If you are reading this reflection then we are somehow connected, and for that I offer you my thanks. Happy Birthday to me! I look forward to what comes next.
