“What is saving my life now is the conviction that there is no spiritual treasure to be found apart from the bodily experiences of human life on earth. My life depends on engaging the most ordinary physical activities with the most exquisite attention I can give them. My life depends on ignoring all touted distinctions between the secular and the sacred, the physical and the spiritual, the body and the soul. What is saving my life now is becoming more fully human, trusting that there is no way to God apart from real life in the real world.”

– Barbara Brown Taylor

“Our goal should be to live life in radical amazement…get up in the morning and look at the world in a way that takes nothing for granted. Everything is phenomenal, everything is incredible; never treat life casually. To be spiritual is to be amazed.”

– Abraham Joshua Heschel

“A little consideration of what takes place around us every day, would show us that a higher law than that of our will, regulates events; that our painful experiences are not necessary. A believing love will relieve us of a vast load of care. Oh, my brothers, God exists!”

– Ralph Waldo Emerson

“The world is holy. We are holy. All life is holy. Daily prayers are delivered on the lips of breaking waves, the whisperings of grasses, the shimmering of leaves.”

– Terry Tempest Williams

In the last 24 hours these quotes have come into my awareness in various and random ways. Maybe it’s just coincidence, but it’s almost like the Universe is trying to tell me something, if only I will pay attention. And so, at least in this moment, I am choosing to pay attention. I will continue to strive to (in the words of Barbara Brown Taylor) “become more fully human, trusting that there is no way to God apart from real life in the real world.” In other words, to show up and be as fully present in this and every moment as I can possibly manage. Because this and every moment is, indeed, holy and precious and mysterious and amazing.
